Elise Øverland

This was one of the shows I enjoyed at NYFW. Elise Øverland was born and raised in Norway. Being surrounded by mountains tends to cause one to be creative. With a BFA from Parsons School of Design, right here in NY, she went to work. Her edgy but functional pieces caught the eye of many musicians, who began commissioning her to design stage pieces. She has had a wide range of clients, from the Dixie Chicks to Alicia Keys.

Øverland claims this collection was inspired by a book on Japanese sushi. Don't know what I think about that one, so I'll let you guys decide.

Her collection had a lot of black pieces, but underneath were random pops of color including teal and purple, so boring it was not. All her pieces were well finished and structured to give a sleek, edgy look. She seemed to favor lamb skin quite a bit, but she worked it well, to the point where you have to take a good look to discern the material. Bravo!

Though there were many highlights, she didn't get it all right. Some outfits just looked awkward. The model with a short, flimsy dress and bulky looking jacket confused me. What kind of weather is that for? The outfit just didn't fit in with the overall sleekness of the show. Good try but better luck next time.

Roksanda Ilincic

What does a girl from Belgrade whose parents were a pharmacist and businessman do with her life? Design of course! After attending Belgrade University for her BA, during the Serbian war of the 90s, she went to London to follow her real passion. She received a MA in womenswear from Central Saint Martins and the rest is history.

For Fall '09, she does not disappoint. She continues her pattern of exaggerated shoulders and whimsical outfits. The kind of dresses you would wear once to the perfect event and wrap it up to preserve the memories. A romantic kind of feel that Ilincic puts into all of her designs.

The clothes were extremely structures giving it a Grimm's fairytale kind of twist. I would have preferred a wider color range, because I think color would add more pop to her well designed pieces. The fabrics seemed to have that variety the color lacked. Faux crocodile mixed in with satin and velvet gave drama.

Though some of her separates were amazing, it was the dresses that stole the show. Study now because Roxy, as her friends call her, is only going up.

Congrats!

This goes out to Drake. After having fans waiting up for 2 days with no sleep [myself included] he finally dropped his mixtape, So Far Gone. It's generating unbelievable buzz even now, days after it dropped. The album is filled with him singing so don't expect anything like his previous mixtape, Comeback Season. Just know this man is pretty much unstoppable. Thank Me Later, the official album, drops sometime in 2009. Be on the look out.

Download the original album version or chopped & screwed album by Mr. Rogers by clicking the pictures. Then check out the video interview below.

And that’s not to say it’s not a glamorous life and it’s not fun, but the reality is it’s great for the average person to hear a musician’s reality because we all seem so unattainable and so out of reach that when you bring yourself back to eye level with a fan and do it in the right way…

He Needs a Girl

Check out Trey Songz new single called "I Need a Girl"
It's kind of cute --- but definitely not his best in my opinion.

P.I.M.P

"Fiddy" is coming from left field and giving us something that I would have never expected from someone as hardcore as him. Reports say that rapper-mogul 50 Cent is finishing a new cosmetics line for men, which will include moisturizers and health supplements.

Yup, I was surprised too ... but at second thought, his skin has been giving 'flawless flow' lately. A source says that "his range will be for the guy who likes to be pampered, but the supplements will make it more butch." 50 is definitely giving me some Diddy dapper swagger with this one.

I love these shorts because of the drop crotch.
It gives the cool laidback vibe without actually having your pants all the way off of your butt.

Bye, Bye Bryant

According to the L.A Times:

"New York's biannual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will move from its current home in midtown's Bryant Park to Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center beginning in September 2010, said Fern Mallis, senior vice president of IMG Fashion, which produces the shows.
The new location will have 25% more room than the old location, but it is farther uptown than the tents at Bryant Park, which could make it all the more challenging to lure designers, many of whom already show in Chelsea or SoHo instead.

This season, which begins Feb. 13, will include more than 70 shows. In 2006, the Bryant Park Corporation announced it would no longer allow the shows to happen in the park, because they were interfering with public use of the area but later relented. The events are fashion tourism bringing in hundreds of thousands of attendees and around $466 million in visitor spending each year, according to the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the NY Times reports that IMG pays $1 million to $1.5 million to use the space each season."
